AI-powered engineering tools - such as code assistants, automated testing, documentation generation, and incident triage - are helping teams deliver change faster and with higher quality. In parallel, workflow automation across areas like compliance reporting, onboarding, and customer operations is reducing manual effort and operational risk.

What makes these use cases compelling is their clarity of outcome. Improvements in delivery speed, defect rates, and staff productivity can be quantified quickly, enabling organisations to build credible business cases and reinvest savings. They also operate largely within controlled internal environments, which reduces data and reputational risk and accelerates stakeholder buy-in.

For many organisations, building this capability creates the conditions needed to move into more complex, customer-facing or decision-critical AI use cases over time.

Trend 3: AI Labs Compete Through Verticalisation

As foundation models become increasingly commoditised, differentiation among AI providers is shifting away from model performance alone and toward industry-specific value. The trade-off is that organisations need to be mindful of lock-in and ensure they don’t sacrifice long-term flexibility for short-term gains.

Enterprises that succeed will be those that leverage vertical strengths where they add value, while maintaining clear design principles that protect optionality as the market continues to evolve.

Trend 4: Governance Remains the Unresolved Tension

Despite growing maturity elsewhere, AI governance remains a persistent challenge. Security, privacy, regulatory compliance, and model risk are widely recognised concerns, yet investment in governance often lags behind deployment. The core issue is that governance is difficult to tie directly to short-term ROI.

As AI systems become embedded in critical workflows, the consequences of weak governance increase. Data leakage, biased outputs, and unclear accountability all represent material business risk - particularly in regulated industries. At the same time, many organisations lack consistent standards for model lifecycle management, auditability, and operational ownership.

Too often, governance is treated as a brake on innovation rather than an enabler of scale. This leads to fragmented controls, manual approvals, and inconsistent practices that slow delivery without meaningfully reducing risk.
